A clinic specialising in traditional Chinese medicine, to open in Canberra next month, has the aim of becoming a centre of excellence with world-class staff attracting patients from all parts of Australia......

The clinic, which is currently being fitted out in Woden, will be run by two brothers from China, both doctors and lecturers in traditional Chinese medicine. One, Wang Haidong, set up a short course in traditional Chinese medicine at the CIT in 1996, and has been back and forth several times since. His younger brother, Wang Haisong, has been on the CIT staff since 1998 as a visiting fellow.

Wang Haidong said there were several reasons why the Liaoning institutions had decided on a partnership with Canberra.

"On my first visit I went to Sydney and Melbourne before I came here," he said. "They are big cities, not so much different from what is commonplace in China.

"Then I came to Canberra and this city was very different. We have a belief that traditional Chinese medicine is most effective in a good environment, and this was an ideal place to test those theories.

"Also, our medicine is not just about treatment, it is about prevention, and this city is ideal for presenting our ideas about prevention and a healthy lifestyle. We also received good support from the CIT and the ACT Government......

Mr Veenker said the cooperation would provide a better service to all Canberrans, and the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Roger Rose, said CIT staff and students were already benefiting from the international exposure.
